The Best Ways to See Africa

14 Jan 2012 / 0 Comments / in Africa, Volunteering/by Nikki

People often forget that Africa is a continent, not a country, made up of varied nations which all offer something unique in both landscape and culture. Because Africa is so vast and diverse there are many different ways to explore Africa, a few of which we look at below.

Overlanding
As part of a group of like-minded travellers, overlanding tour groups travel through Africa in overland vehicles that are custom built to manage the terrain. Although commercial overlanding was established back in the 1960s the principle has stayed very much the same, with the focus remaining on experiencing real African landscapes and people. Overland tours usually come with basic accommodation and meals included, with more emphasis put on excursions and experiences rather than home comforts.

Safaris
Just like overlanding, safaris are another adventurous way to get up close and personal with nature. Unlike overlanding, however, safaris are often shorter, lasting between one and five days whereas overlanding usually starts from about one week. Comprising of smaller groups and often sophisticated accommodation, safaris are often seen as the more luxurious alternative to experiencing Africa by vehicle.

Eco/Ethical Travel
As we become more and more conscious about environmental and social issues, with it comes a growing demand for authentic and sustainable eco and ethical travel throughout Africa. Specialist travel companies now cater for this market by providing tours, safaris and projects with a focus on conservation, education and fair employment whilst still ensuring the tourist or traveller remains catered for.

Volunteering
For many, experiencing Africa is about working with local communities and organisations to ‘give something back’. There are many different volunteering projects throughout Africa, from teaching children and providing much needed medical aid to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Tailor-made volunteer trips from Amanzi Travel ensure that each volunteer’s knowledge and interest are matched to suit the volunteer project, ensuring both parties benefit from the programme.

So what are you waiting for? See Africa your way soon.
