5 Reasons to Volunteer in Africa

28 Jan 2012 / 0 Comments / in Africa, Animals, People, Volunteering/by Nikki

Whether you’re 18 and thinking of taking a gap year or 45 and looking to take a sabbatical, you will probably be considering booking a volunteer programme somewhere around the world. To help make up your mind, we have come up 5 great reasons to volunteer in Africa.

The People

It’s fair to say that most African countries have had much more than their fair share of political and economic instability, but through it all the people have managed to stay positive and very endearing. Whilst precautions need to be taken in any country, African people as a ‘whole’ (we use this word loosely as each country has it’s own unique cultures and people) are welcoming and inviting of foreign tourists and especially aid workers.

The Landscape

Africa is known for its arid landscapes and deserts, but whilst these indeed exist, there is so much more to Africa’s vast landscape. From the open plains of Kenya and the sandy dunes of the Sahara Desert to the rainforests of Congo and the grassy savannas of the Serengeti, no African landscape is the same.

The Causes

As we have mentioned, over the years Africa has experienced many ups and downs. Because of this, the volunteer programmes based in African countries are necessary to helping secure a sustainable future for many young and old men and women of Africa.

The Variety

Africa offers a wide range of volunteer programmes from wildlife conservation and research to orphan care, teaching and medical support. Not only this, but the length of volunteer programmes dramatically vary too, with short and long term projects available depending on how much time volunteers have to spare.

The Challenge

Perhaps one of the draws of volunteering in Africa is the challenge. Whatever project volunteers choose, the very nature of volunteering often requires the ability to adapt to often heart-breaking, emotional situations. However, volunteers quickly learn how appreciated their time is, with the support an important part of Africa’s future.

Amanzi Travel offers volunteer placements throughout Africa, offering a personalised approach to helping potential volunteers choose the right programme for them. Give us a call now and have the experience of a lifetime in Africa.
